2022
Canine-Human Entanglement Session
August 5-8, 2022
Facilitated by Dori Miller and Rumpelstiltskin Morgan
Participants: Sarah Grass, Dori Miller, Rumpelstiltskin Morgan, and Zelikha Shoja
This is an opportunity for critical inquiries and experimentation into/within the roles of non- human companions, particularly dogs, and creative practices. Embracing collaboration we are asked to take a breath, observe, and contemplate our sensibilities of multi-species coexistence through the lens of human relationships with canine companions. In what ways does the care for dogs affect our human connectedness to non-humans within ecosystemic being? Are there ways in which our practices have been impacted by their presence? This session works to re- evaluate entanglements through experimentation and mini process based workshops to develop and strengthen attentiveness and care for the world in which human-canine relationships are a critical part.
Workshops: Dog Energy Drawing with Dori, Guided Visualization with Sarah, and Hand Weaving Memories with Zelikha and Rumpelstiltskin
The Getaway at Emerald Glen: Brief History
https://glenhighlandfarm.com
Under new ownership since 2020, Mindy and Ian recognize the importance of slowing down to enjoy what life has to offer, and the benefit of sharing that with our friends (whether that be 2 or 4 legged). After visiting the Getaway it quickly became apparent to us that Emerald Glen was truly a unique place and where we needed to be and so we made the decision to pursue our love for the outdoors and dogs by continuing the Getaway. They’ve moved across the country with their two dogs, Siena (chocolate lab) and Honcho (black lab), as well as their ginormous tabby cat, Tigger. (The Getaway at Emerald Glen)
Previously The Getaway at Glen Highland Farm, a border collie rescue that moved to Virginia
seeking a mild climate for the senior rescues. Every decision that went into designing the
getaway was inspired by the beautiful souls that resided here.
You and your dog can explore the 120 acre property that includes full use of the dining pavilion,
pantry, bathroom & shower facilities, rest areas, the trails, the winding creek and endless acres
of fields and meadows -- the perfect backdrop for light hiking, swimming and wading, playing
fetch, bird watching, relaxing, napping, and more.

Objectives and Expectations
Over the course of three days, 5 collaborators (myself included) will participate in collective and private experiences with(in) the landscape with the intention of being present and taking time and space to meditate on the wealth of history, experiences, and knowledges we as individuals and collectives have with dogs and the non-human world. This is facilitated in a location created specifically for dogs within an anthropocentric capitalist social structure. The only requirement for private time is that you are working to wholly engage in the experience of the location and objectives of the residency. This may include interactions with other residents, time alone, or any combination or other desired forms of engagement.
Each collaborator is expected to present a public workshop/exercise for collaborators and current visitors to engage in. Please note, there are no reservations for spaces, and activities cannot infringe upon the experiences of other visitors. This can be in any format and is completely open to interpretation - everything is an opportunity for learning.
Given the short duration of the program, there are no requirements for working on a particular project or body of work. That said, you are more than welcome to bring materials that are portable, and do not require hazardous waste removal such as mineral spirits. Nothing is permitted to be dumped or disposed of into the landscape- follow take-in take-out practices. No permanent alterations to the space permitted. There are no designated “studio” facilities, material shops, or walls for installation. This is an ephemeral session, everyone is expected to respect their surroundings including The Getaway, land, and beings.
Allow yourself to be open to the space and bring the lessons with you when returning home.
Who is this for?
Creatives in any field or combinations of practices are welcome! There are 4 spots available. The only requirements are to come with a canine companion that is present and vital to your daily practice whether directly or indirectly, and those set by The Getaway at Emerald Glen which include but are not limited to dog breed, behavior, and spay/neuter/vaccination status. Please see the attached policies for more information.

Canine Rules
1. Keep your dog in your sight and under your voice control. If you are unable to do this in a particular situation, consider having your dog on leash or do not have him out with you at that time.
2. Prevent your dog from acting aggressively or overly rambunctious towards other dogs or people. Nipping, grabbing, charging or excessive barking or jumping up should not be allowed. Leash your dog or remove your dog from the situation. There is a NO TOLERANCE rule regarding dog bites. If your dog bites another person, you will be asked to leave.
3. Monitor your dog when he is involved in group play. No one should allow any dog (yours or someone else’s) to be picked on, ganged up on, etc.
4. Ask permission from the owner first, before engaging in a game of fetch with a dog that is not yours. A dog may have health issues that you are not aware of!
5. Keep all food items away from the reach of dogs. Be mindful of where you leave bags and jackets with food items where dogs can reach them (on the ground, hanging on chairs, etc). Besides ingesting something that is not good for them, accessible food may cause a dog fight.
6. Do not allow your dog to resource guard. If your dog is guarding you, your table in the pavilion, the entrance to your lodging, etc. you must not allow this to continue. Remove your dog from the situation.
7. If you have multiple dogs, you need to be able to manage them ALL. Dogs from the same household have a certain pack dynamic that can easily overwhelm other dogs and people. If you are not able to monitor the whereabouts of all your dogs, or 2 or even 1 of them, leave them in your lodging to make it easier on yourself. Give them turns with you or give them all a break!
8. Rest your dog! Your dog is probably not used to the constant stimulation, exploring, playing, running and swimming as he is probably asleep while you are at work all day! Remember to give your dog frequent breaks from all the action so they don’t get grouchy!
9. Pick up the poop that you see! Nobody wants to step in dog poop – please pick up dog poop when you come across it, even if it was not left there by your dog!
10. Be tolerant of eachother if issues with dogs come up. Remember everyone is here because they love their dogs as much as you do!
If you are having trouble managing or understanding your dog’s behavior in this new environment... please contact us. We are more than happy to help.
Your cooperation is needed or you may be asked to leave.
